A wooden platform that challenges visitors by testing their sense of balance. We helped Julien F. Thomas, artist in residence at DordtYart, to realize his project “Conversation (im)balance”.
The design is a complex 3D puzzle made up of interlocking wooden pieces that can be easily taken apart and put back together. Each piece has a unique weight-saving space frame design with intricate details that are visible when the platform tilts.
To ensure optimum structure, weight distribution and ease of (re)construction, the 4-meter wide platform was designed completely in 3D and the 94 individual parts were parametrically translated into a 2D environment. This allowed the export of CNC machine code, and each piece was then milled and constructed.
