Transforming a compact ground-floor apartment in Amsterdam into a pleasant, usable home requires clever interventions. The limited floor space and narrow width provided the starting point for a new layout. By rotating the floor plan, a bedroom could be created near the entrance, allowing the living room to open up to the garden.

On the northeast side, an extension with an open ceiling provides a pleasant amount of indirect daylight at the dining table. The glass facade allows the indoors and outdoors to flow seamlessly, making the garden a natural part of the living room.

The interior subtly references the historic character of the circa 1910 house. En-suite doors are integrated into a custom-made wall of wardrobes separating the living and sleeping areas. The ceiling is enhanced with decorative cornices and a stucco rosette. By making sections of the sliding doors transparent, daylight can penetrate deep into the heart of the house.
