As an entry for a competition for an enclosure for an electricity substation, we designed this proposal, Brick Biotope, based on perforated bricks; in this way, we connect urban quality with ecological value.
Series of stacked bricks with perforations form the basis of the design. A variety of openings provides nesting and hiding places for insects, thereby contributing to biodiversity. At the same time, the bricks create a characteristic facade, in which patterns emerge through the alternation of brick types and colors. The use of brick gives the volume a recognizable, urban appearance. By playing with color and configuration, the system can be tailored to the identity of a neighborhood or location.

The building system is modular. Bricks are clamped into steel profiles that form pilasters. These pilasters are securely attached to a rear supporting structure of uprights using bolt connections. The slender system has a depth of 95 millimeters, including the structure. The modular design makes assembly, maintenance, and any adjustments simple.
The openable sections are constructed of metal that is as lightweight as possible and have a high-quality, urban appearance. They limit the view of the electricity substation behind them.
