As an entry for a competition for an enclosure for an electricity substation, we designed this proposal, Brick Biotope, based on perforated bricks; in this way, we connect urban quality with ecological value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Series of stacked bricks with perforations form the basis of the design. A variety of openings provides nesting and hiding places for insects, thereby contributing to biodiversity. At the same time, the bricks create a characteristic facade, in which patterns emerge through the alternation of brick types and colors. The use of brick gives the volume a recognizable, urban appearance. By playing with color and configuration, the system can be tailored to the identity of a neighborhood or location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The building system is modular. Bricks are clamped into steel profiles that form pilasters. These pilasters are securely attached to a rear supporting structure of uprights using bolt connections. The slender system has a depth of 95 millimeters, including the structure. The modular design makes assembly, maintenance, and any adjustments simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The openable sections are constructed of metal that is as lightweight as possible and have a high-quality, urban appearance. They limit the view of the electricity substation behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
